Antibiotics; These are medicines used to cobat bacteria. They are either given by injection or inserted directly in the teat canal(at drying off or when the cow has mastitis). When antibiotics are used to treat a sick cow, residues will remain in the milk and meat for a period of time(The withdrawal period).People who drink or eat meat during this period will ingest residues of the antibiotics.Intensive or improper use of antibiotics results in bacteria that survive becoming stronger,so they can withstand future antibiotic medication(develop resistance). This applies to bacteria not only in Animals, but also in humans. Effect on Milk processing; Milk containing antibiotics is not suitable for processing into cheese or yoghurt because the residues kills the right bacteria needed for these processes. In many cases such mik is rejected by the processor. Action point to farmers; 1. Notice a sick cow 2.Treat the cow with appropriate antibiotic 3.Check the withdrawal period on the package leaf let. 4.Record the date of injection and the withdrawal period. 5.Separate the cow from the rest and mark her with a leg strap. 6.Ensure the cow is milked last and that the milk of this cow does not enter the milk stream.
