Zero Grazing Unit. There are several grazing regimes a farm can implement i.e Zero grazing,Paddocking,Free range, semi-zero grazing.Adoption of these methods varies depending on the farmer's interest, availability of resources and the herd size.Let us scale down to the first one Zero-grazing;In this system, the herd is confined in one place, and feed and water is brought to the animal.Zero grazing is applicable in densely populated high potential areas where little land is available. Its advantages are;clean milk production is possible, good calf rearing practices, and manure can be used for other fodder crops not forgetting Bio-gas an energy source from slurry, the animals are better protected against diseases ,they can easily be observed specially for heat detection ,the animals are kept secure. The disadvantages include;More labour is needed, much capital is required to construct a good zero grazing unit. This therefore calls for proper planning before starting to evade huge losses.
